Winter 2023 - Your Guide to The Season's Best Fun

Home » Things to Do » Seasons on LI » 2023 Winter Fun

Winter is here! Though many people might think that the summer is the best time for Long Island fun and entertainment there is tons of, “Winter Wonderland” fun to be had here too! From Christmas tree lightings, to sledding, to special theater performances and ice skating, there are endless possibilities for frosty wintertime enjoyment.

You don’t have to make your way all the way into New York City to take in the beauty and amusements of winter. Don some warm garb, don’t forget your hat, scarf, and gloves – and bundle up before you head out into the cold to delight in the many merry winter activities Long Island has to offer. Don't forget to reward yourself afterward by warming up with a nice, steaming cup of hot chocolate.

One of the best parts of winter is that you can spend time both inside and outside having a blast. After it snows you can run around outside making snow angels, constructing snowmen, and starting snowball fights. You can take the whole family out for a ride in the car to view all of the spectacular holiday light displays in your area. Then if it’s too chilly to be outside, spend some quality time inside. Invoke some friendly competition and play board games or watch the holiday movie specials on TV by the fireplace, that is, if you’re lucky enough to have one!

Best Bets for Enjoying The Winter

The crisp, chilly weather is the perfect time to partake in winter sports and snowy day fun. Try your hand at cross country skiing at one of Long Island’s parks. Perfect your snowman building skills and dress them up in some of your old clothes. Visit your nearest outdoor ice skating rink and glide around making figure eights. Get out there and enjoy some frosty fun!

A Season's Worth of Snowy Day Fun

While spending time out in the cold can be fun for awhile, eventually it’s time to get back the feeling in your toes and head into the warmth.  For safety reasons there are times in the winter when it really is just way too cold, or dangerous on the roads, to be venturing outside. This is in no way a defeat to your day though! Opt to spend the day inside baking gingerbread cookies, and crafting homemade snow globes. Read some classic winter stories and tales with the kids. If the roads aren’t too bad go out to see a movie or visit a local museum. A snowy day doesn’t have to mean a lack of cheerful activities or entertainment.
