Calling all history buffs, farm fans and community service-oriented folks, Hallockville Museum Farm invites you to learn more about volunteering at this historic North Fork farm homestead during its Volunteer Recruitment Open House on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hallockville Museum Farm is a 28-acre preserved farm homestead located on Sound Avenue in Riverhead. The Museum Farm boasts 19 historic buildings, antique farm equipment, cows, pigs, sheep and chickens. Among the historic structures is the preserved Hallock Homestead farmhouse that dates back to 1765 and is listed on the national and state registers of historic places.

“Hallockville is a nonprofit organization with an important mission – connecting people with Long Island’s agricultural heritage and helping them to understand how that is relevant today,” said Heather Johnson, Hallockville executive director. “The North Fork wineries and orchards, farmstands and its farm-to-table dining scene are all rooted in the area’s family farm heritage. We think it’s very important to bring that message forward now and for future generations.”

Volunteer roles at Hallockville Museum Farm include gardening, helping to organize and staff special events, maintaining the buildings and grounds, serving as tour docents, arranging and leading educational and children’s activities and adult workshops, and assisting with marketing and fundraising.

“While Hallockville Museum Farm relies on the time and talents of volunteers to augment the work of the museum’s small staff, our volunteers have another very important role – they help to nurture nature, history and the North Fork community,” Ms. Johnson added.

Adults and teens interested in attending the April 27 Volunteer Recruitment Open House are encouraged to sign-up in advance by email to: asstdirector@hallockville.org or by phoning Hallockville at 631-298-5292. Walk-ins are welcome, too.
