Long Island, NY - September 15, 2017 - Two-time Pulitzer Prize winning Editorial Cartoonist Walt Handelsman of The New Orleans Advocate keynotes the luncheon at The News Conference: Real & Powerful, the premier conference in the country to bring the media and community together for a day of open dialogue and mutual understanding.

Taking place on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the iconic Garden City Hotel on Long Island, N.Y., The News Conference features a breakfast program, 12 breakout sessions, networking breaks, exhibitors and a special intensive workshop to teach small nonprofits media relations and marketing skills. Participants support the work of the Fair Media Council, a 501c3 nonprofit organization.
 
After the luncheon, Handelsman takes part in a breakout session discussing editorial cartoons and their impact, including recent controversies from around the world. Joining him in the discussion will be two more highly acclaimed editorial cartoonists: Matt Davies of Newsday and Jimmy Margulies of amNewYork.
 
Sponsorships and tickets are available now, with a portion of the price being tax deductible and benefiting the Fair Media Council, a 501c3 nonprofit organization advocating for quality news and creating a media savvy society.
 
ABOUT WALT HANDELSMAN
 
As one of the most widely reprinted cartoonists in America, Handelsman’s work has been seen in Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post and The Chicago Tribune. He has been a featured guest on CNN, The NewsHour and ABC’s “Nightline.”
 
He has won every major journalism award for cartooning excellence including: The 1989 and 1993 National Headliner Award, The 1992 and 2015 Society of Professional Journalists Award, The 1996 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, The 2003 Scripps Howard National Journalism award, The 2007 Online Journalism Award and in 1997 and 2007, The Pulitzer Prize.
 
In 2006, he taught himself Flash animation and in 2007 he became the first person to win the Pulitzer Prize for animation.
 
In addition to appearing in The New Orleans Advocate, Handelsman’s work is nationally syndicated by Tribune Content Agency in Chicago to over 200 newspapers around the country and internationally.
 
A uniquely engaging public speaker, his fast-paced, high-energy presentations combine examples of his still cartoons along with his animations, on-the-spot drawing and voice and sound impressions.
 
Before joining The New Orleans Advocate in 2013, he worked for Newsday in New York (2001-2013), The Times-Picayune in New Orleans (1989-2001), The Scranton Times (1985-1989) and a chain of 13 Suburban Baltimore weeklies (1982-1985).  He is the author of seven collections of his editorial cartoons as well as a children’s book published in 1995. He and his family live in New Orleans.
