Despite the fact that, for the most part, weddings and events have been put on indefinite hold on Long Island, David Tannenbaum has been keeping busy.

His Bohemia-based company, New York Tent, is usually helping stage spring affairs with tenting, decor, and dancefloors, but instead they’ve been assembling temporary ICUs for hospitals to treat the overflow of Covid patients on Long Island.

His company has already helped build out tents for testing areas and ICUs for Stony Brook Hospital, North Shore University Hospital, and Southside Hospital among others. They even built a temporary ICU in White Plains for the Army Corp of Engineers.

Through the work, Tannenbaum is seeing firsthand the tremendous need as Long Island battles the epidemic and the toll it takes on frontline workers.

“We all have friends and family [on the front lines],” he said. “We get the reports back of how tough it’s been.”

So, Tannenbaum - who usually spends a lot of time thinking about the big day for many brides and grooms - wanted to give something back to those on the workers who are sacrificing for the rest of us.

New York Tent is hosting a fun contest to give away $40,000 worth of their services to a couple who have fought on the front lines during the pandemic. They call it the “Healthcare Hero Wedding Giveaway.”

The contest is open to any Long Island couple 18 years of age or older who are engaged to be married with at least one partner employed as a healthcare hero in New York. This includes doctors, nurses, support staff and anyone else who works in healthcare and is on the front lines during Covid pandemic. From now until June 15, a couple submits an application to a special website that New York Tent has set up for the contest.

To enter, they must fill out an application form along with a video of no more than three minutes showing off your personalities in a creative way. New York Tent will choose three candidates and put them out there on their website and promote on social media for the public to vote on a winner. Voting will take place from June 16 to June 21. The winner will be announced on June 24 on the website and on New York Tent social media platforms.

The winner will be given $40,000 in credit to put together a wedding venue from New York Tent including a tent to accommodate up to 175 guests with sidewalls, fabric decor, lighting, flooring including dance floor and furniture rentals.

Even with the world shut down, Tannenbaum - who has owned New York Tent for seven years but has been in the wedding and special event industry for more than 20 years - says that people are still getting engaged and thinks that it is “a nice thing to give back” and provide a dream wedding to a special front line medical worker.

“It felt right,” he said.
