Weather Alert!
"AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 11 PM EDT THURSDAY" The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties... Richmond...Kings...Queens...New York...Bronx... Westchester...Rockland...Nassau...Suffolk. from 11 AM to 11 PM EDT Thursday. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone . The Air Quality Index...or AQI...was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value...the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated...the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young...and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. The toll free number is 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5. Weather  |  LIRR  |  Traffic  |  Traffic Cams |  Weather News  |  School Closings

Dear Long Islander,

After a late winter storm scare, it looks like the weekend will be warming up, and hopefully most of the remaining snow that's seen piled up around Long Island will begin its final melt. Spring is right around the corner, although it seems this year that the old March adage "in like a lion, out like a lamb" has been holding true - just as we began to see the first glimpses of Spring weather, Winter reared its ugly head for one last hurrah. Not to worry though, Long Island - warmer weather is right around the corner, with temperatures in the 40s predicted for the weekend - perfect weather to get out, and begin your Spring Cleaning, or enjoy a walk through on of Long Island's numerous parks, where wildlife is welcoming Springtime as well.

Hot Off the Presses
LI Index Report: Results & Analysis
The State of LI Can Be Measured in Many Ways
From post-World War II through the latter half of the 20th century, Long Island was synonymous with a high quality of life, a place where the unprecedented expansion of population, housing and jobs would not only ensure the success and prosperity of future generations, but would permanently reshape the demographic, social, economic and political landscape of the area. Over time, however, Long Island’s prosperity began to wane as people who bought bigger homes and expensive automobiles were forced to travel farther to the jobs they needed to pay for them. Outdated roadways became congested, gas prices soared, taxes rose and, rather than getting ahead, Long Islanders were finding it harder and harder to make ends meet.
