Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced that a Hempstead man was sentenced yesterday to 12 years in prison for a 2020 ambush shooting at an apartment building on Terrace Avenue in Hempstead that left his victim with serious physical injuries.

Arem Rodgers, 51, pleaded guilty before Judge Terence Murphy on September 6, 2022, to charges including Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (a B violent felony); and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (a C violent felony). The defendant was sentenced yesterday to 12 years in prison and five years post release supervision.

DA Donnelly said on March 6, 2020, at approximately 8:11 p.m. in the vestibule at 107 Terrace Avenue in Hempstead, the defendant fired approximately 11 rounds from a loaded handgun through a glass door, striking a 26-year-old victim seven times in the legs, shoulder, chest, and spine, as he tried to escape. Rodgers then fled the scene to a nearby building.

The victim suffered significant injuries, including damage to major organs, three fractured ribs, and a left lung laceration.

Rodgers was arrested on May 18, 2020, in Mineola by members of the Nassau County Police Department.
