Suffolk County, NY - October 4, 2016 - An off-duty Suffolk County police officer arrested last week after allegedly driving the wrong way on Sunrise Highway where he crashed into a van killing the driver pleaded not guilty to a charge of reckless endangerment in the first degree at a bedside arraignment today.
Robert Scheuerer, 24, remains in serious condition at Southside Hospital where he was taken after the September 27th crash in the westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway, between exits 39 and 40. Police said Scheuerer was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane.
The Suffolk County Police Department announced last week that Scheuerer was suspended from duty without pay.
The investigation is continuing. Reckless endangerment in the first degree is a class “D” felony.
Judge David Morris presided at the arraignment and set cash bail at $150,000, or $250,000 bond.
November 17 is the next court date.
