The great white shark, estimated to be 8-feet long, was spotted ashore by a local at Ocean Beach in the Village of Quogue at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said in a press release.

Quogue Village Police said, “At this time we are cautioning swimmers and boaters in the area to be aware of this ongoing situation, and to keep distance to allow the Law Enforcement to monitor this event."

The male shark is half the size of an average great white shark, and it is estimated to be about 6 to 10 years old.

The shark's body washed back out to sea but authorities are hoping to recover it for tests and necropsy.

The police "have been in contact with South Fork Natural History Museum Shark Research and Education Program, who are attempting to monitor this situation along with our law enforcement partners."

This is one of many recent shark sightings on Long Island.
