On April 18, 2024, at approximately 4:18 p.m., a Trooper conducted a traffic stop of a Blue Honda Odyssey for an expired Connecticut registration on the Southern State Parkway Westbound at Exit 18, Eagle Ave, in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County.

As the Trooper approached the vehicle on the passenger side, the operator Calith M. Hudson, age 33 of Jamaica, NY became verbally combative. Upon asking Hudson for his driver's license, Hudson threw his license to the ground and then climbed over the passenger seat and exited the vehicle.  The Trooper gave Hudson verbal commands to stay in the vehicle which Hudson ignored. Hudson proceeded to strike the Trooper in the face with a closed fist causing injury to the Trooper. A physical altercation ensued and with the assistance of several good Samaritans who stopped upon seeing the altercation, the Trooper was able to take Hudson into custody.

The Trooper and Hudson were both taken to local hospitals where they were treated and released for non-life threating injuries. Hudson was transported to SP East Meadow for processing and charged with Assault in the 2nd degree (D Felony), Resisting Arrest (A Misdemeanor), and Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd (A Misdemeanor).

Every day in law enforcement, there is no such thing as “a routine traffic stop.” In this instance what one may call a “routine” traffic stop, led to a physical altercation and a trooper becoming injured. The New York State Police would like to thank the good Samaritans who stopped to assist in this incident. Highway safety is a partnership between law enforcement and the community at large. If not for the efforts of these good Samaritans, our trooper potentially could have been seriously injured.
