New York, NY - October 25, 2016 - New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV) is proud to endorse Hillary Clinton for President of the United States due to her consistent support for strong gun safety laws.
Secretary Clinton is an outspoken supporter of gun safety and has taken meaningful action to protect Americans, and especially children, from the scourge of gun death and injury. Her support for sensible action and legislation to reduce gun violence and protect all Americans has been enduring, consistent and thoughtful, respecting the rights and viewpoints of all Americans.
As America’s first lady, she convened a White House Summit on School Violence after the Columbine tragedy and was a strong supporter of the Brady background check bill and the ban on sales of assault weapons whose only purpose is the rapid and indiscriminate taking of human life.
As New York senator, Hillary Clinton co-sponsored legislation to close the “gun show loophole,” which allows gun shows and internet sellers to evade background check requirements. She voted against legislation to grant gun manufacturers and dealers immunity and protection from liability– the only industry to enjoy such protection. Clinton also co-sponsored legislation to extend and reinstate the federal ban on the sale of assault weapons. While supporting the rights of lawful citizens to bear arms as granted by the Second Amendment, she has supported the reasonable regulations which state and federal governments and courts, including the Supreme Court, have adopted and enforced.
NYAGV supports her stated priorities on gun safety going forward, which include:
- Expanding background checks to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists, abusers and other violent offenders;
- Closing the gun show loophole;
- Making mental health care available to those who need it; and
- Enforcing existing laws to revoke the licenses of gun dealers who flagrantly and recklessly sell multiple guns to straw buyers, which are then resold and used in the commission of crimes.
Hillary Clinton has shown the ability to work with people who have differing views to reach mutually beneficial solutions. Her experience in private and public life, in the Senate and as Secretary of State, make her perhaps the most qualified candidate ever to seek the office of President of the United States.
