Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced that a former New York City Police Department detective was sentenced to three to six years in prison for driving drunk on the Meadowbrook State Parkway in August 2023 and crashing his vehicle into another, seriously injuring two women.
George Moore, 40, pleaded guilty before Judge Howard Sturim on November 13, 2024, to charges of Aggravated Vehicular Assault (a C felony); Assault in the Second Degree (a D violent felony); Assault in the Third Degree (an A misdemeanor); and Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated (an unclassified misdemeanor).
The defendant was sentenced today to three to six years in prison.
“As a member of law enforcement, George Moore had a sworn duty to protect and serve the public, yet he did the opposite. He chose to violate that trust by driving while intoxicated and put lives at risk,” said DA Donnelly. “His actions were not only a betrayal of his oath, but also a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of impaired driving. Today’s sentence holds this defendant accountable for his reckless behavior and reinforces the principle that no one is above the law, especially those who are entrusted with upholding it.”
DA Donnelly said that on August 4, 2023, the defendant was driving with a female passenger in a 2014 Mercedes northbound on the Meadowbrook State Parkway while on his way to work in Queens, where he worked as a detective in the NYPD.
The defendant was drunk and driving aggressively when he crashed into a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the center lane of the parkway.
The force of the impact caused Moore’s car to crash into the center divider of the Meadowbrook and then head-on into a tree on the right shoulder before coming to a rest. As a result of the collision Moore’s vehicle overturned and became engulfed in flames.
The passenger in Moore’s car suffered serious physical injury, including a fracture to her left wrist, a fracture to her left foot and a spinal fracture.
The driver of the Grand Cherokee suffered injuries to her lower back, left shoulder and right knee.
Moore suffered a broken pelvis, a broken arm, and a broken leg.
All three individuals were transported to Nassau University Medical Center to receive treatment.
After an extensive investigation it was determined that the defendant had consumed alcohol at several bars in the Rockville Centre area before the crash.
The defendant surrendered to members of the New York State Troopers on February 28, 2024.
The case is being prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Nicole Vota of the Vehicular Crimes Bureau under the supervision of Bureau Chief Michael Bushwack and the overall supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney for the Litigation Division Kevin Higgins.
