Anthony Stinson, 13, Critically Injured in Crash with Police Vehicle, Sadly Passes Away

13-year-old Anthony Stinson of Shirley, who was struck and critically injured by a Suffolk County Police vehicle responding to a call last week, sadly passed away after was taken off life support on Monday, September 11.
 
On Saturday, September 9, 2023 at approximately 7:50 p.m., a Seventh Precinct Patrol officer was driving southbound on William Floyd Parkway with lights and siren activated passing through a green light at the intersection of Adobe Drive, when her vehicle struck Anthony, who was riding his bicycle westbound across the intersection.
 
After colliding with Anthony, the police vehicle struck another vehicle stopped in traffic, a tree and two parked cars in front of 152 Margin Drive West. The officer had been responding to a report of an elderly woman in medical distress in Shirley.
 
Anthony  was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition. The officer sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from the same hospital.
 
Anthony was a student in the eighth grade at William Paca Middle School in Mastic Beach.
 
“The district has reached out to the Stinson family to offer any support that they may need during this horrific time. Counselors and psychologists have been and will continue to be available for students affected by this tragedy,” the William Floyd School District said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Anthony’s family and friends during this time.”
 
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help support Anthony's mother during her time of need; the teen's organs are being donated, according to the fundraising page, so that "he can give life to others who need them."
 
"Sadly we learned today that Anthony has succumbed to his injuries," an update on the GoFundMe page reads. "He fought a good fight and this is a tragedy for all involved. Anthony was Claudia's only child and she needs all our help and prayers right now. All money donated will go directly to his mother Claudia Stinson to cover any expenses she might incur from this tragedy."
