Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced that a Freeport man was sentenced today to 29 years in prison for firing at a Freeport Police officer during a foot pursuit in February 2018.
David Serrant, 23, was convicted in May 2022 after a jury trial before Judge Robert Bogle of Attempted Assault in the First Degree (a C violent felony); and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (a C violent felony). Serrant was found not guilty of two counts of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer in the First Degree and one count of Menacing a Police Officer. The defendant was sentenced today to 29 years in prison and five years post release supervision.
“When approached by police officers, this defendant could have easily made the choice to obey their orders. Instead, he took off running and fired his gun directly at an officer during the chase,” said DA Donnelly. “Fortunately, no one was injured, and Serrant was apprehended within minutes. We thank the judge for his decision to hold the defendant accountable for his crimes with this significant prison sentence.”
DA Donnelly said that on February 25, 2018, at approximately 11:50 p.m., Freeport Police Department officers responded to a 911 call for individuals smoking marijuana outside of an apartment building on Pine Street.
As the officers approached, the defendant fled and was followed by two officers. Serrant then fired one round at an officer, who did not return fire, and missed.
The defendant was located several minutes later, in possession of an empty .40 handgun, with the assistance of a police canine unit.
