Man Dies After Physical Confrontation with Police

A man died after being tasered by police in a violent confrontation.

July 24, 2013 - Middle Island, NY - The Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad is investigating the death of a man who died after struggling with police.

 
Seventh Precinct police officers were called to Maryhaven Center of Hope, located at 222 Currans Road in Middle Island, last night after a resident became uncontrollable and violent. Maryhaven employees requested the resident, Dainell Simmons, 29, be transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for a psychiatric emergency.
 
When officers arrived, Simmons fought with police who then deployed a Taser and pepper spray on Simmons. During the struggle, Simmons became unresponsive and he was transported to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson where he died.
 
Multiple police officers were treated and released from various hospitals for injuries sustained during the struggle.
 
Simmons was taken to the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner where an autopsy will be performed.
 
The investigation is continuing.
