Suffolk County Executive Bellone Announces More Than 350 Campsites Available During U.S. Open Golf Championship Weekend

Suffolk County, NY - May 21, 2018 - Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that more than 350 campsites are available at four Suffolk County campgrounds – all within close proximity to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club – during the week of the 118th United States Open Golf Championship. As the week of the U.S. Open approaches, campground availability is likely to change as reservations are made and campsites become filled.
 
In addition, a new Suffolk County website that features an upgraded online reservation system, campsite descriptions and locations, and information on county golf courses and camper rentals was also announced.  A new Promo Code, USOPEN18, will provide visitors with access to the Suffolk County online reservation system without having to pay for a non-residential Green Key Card. Suffolk County has lifted the four night minimum restriction for reservations at Sear Bellows Campground in Hampton Bays during the week of the Golf Championship when reserved using the specialized Promo Code.
 
“There will be nearly 200,000 people converging upon Suffolk County next month to watch the best golfers in the world, and Suffolk County is prepared to provide a diverse and convenient list of accommodations for visitors staying the weekend,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone.  “With over 8,000 hotel room nights expected to be booked for this event alone, we have made the necessary upgrades at our county campgrounds and parks to offer a convenient, accessible and affordable visit for golf fans.”
 
The Suffolk County Department of Parks and Recreation has expedited campground preparations at over 750 campsites to ensure maximum availability for public use at Shinnecock Hills County Park, Sears Bellows County Park, Indian Island County Park, Cedar Point County Park, and Southaven County Park. The public improvements included clearing storm debris; setting up campsites for public use; performing tree work; and restoration of trails, roads other site projects.
 
For those considering traveling by boat, there will be 12 transitional boats slips available for rent during the week of the Golf Championship at the Shinnecock Marina, located less than four miles from Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

The U.S. Open golf championship is anticipated to generate $120 million - $130 million in economic impact for the region. This analysis is based on expected weekly attendance of over 200,000 people, which include players, fans, volunteers, vendors and media.  There will also be approximately 8,000 hotel rooms booked along with an average of 3,500 temporary job opportunities. More than 80 million people around the world, in over 150 countries, will watch the U.S. Open, in turn creating additional tourism exposure for Suffolk County.
