Massapequa Woman, 86, Out Nearly $10,000 After Scammer Claims Daughter Arrested

According to detectives, the victim received a phone call from an unknown male claiming to be a police officer who stated that her daughter was arrested and needed $9800 for bail.

Seventh Squad Detectives report the details of a Grand Larceny/Elder Scam that occurred on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 11:00 am in Massapequa.
 
According to detectives, a female, 86, received a phone call from an unknown male claiming to be a police officer. The unknown male stated that the victim’s daughter was arrested and needed $9800 for bail. 
 
The victim was then connected to another unknown male claiming to be a public defender. The unknown male subject told the victim to withdraw the $9800 from the bank and contact him when she had the money. The victim complied and an unknown female subject arrived at her residence to pick up the money. The female subject left the scene with the cash in a white Toyota Sienna.
 
The following day the victim spoke to family members and was informed that her daughter had not been arrested.
 
The female subject is described as an Asian woman in her thirties.
 
The Nassau County Police Department urges the community to be on alert and to remind vulnerable family members, friends and neighbors about potential scams or fraud.
