Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Congressman (he was elected to the first and second Continental Congress), State Senator, giver of his name to a School District, and Long Islander. William Floyd played an integral role in Long Island history and the formation of the United States of America.

Who knew that he also contributed to another revolution, this one in music.

Apparently, William Floyd is a great (many greats) grandfather of legendary singer/songwriter and folk rock pioneer David Crosby. He was a member of not one but two of the world’s greatest bands of the 1960s: The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

Crosby, who passed away in early 2023, admitted his ancestry traced back to the famed Long Islander in an interview with the Fire Island News.

“I was aware, my mother always told me that, as parents want to let you know about illustrious ancestors,” he said.

The interviewer put it best when interviewing Cosby.

“Let me just say he was a son of the revolution and so are you.”
