Marriage license laws

Can anyone tell me what the marriage license laws are for couples from out of state? We're looking forward to a beach wedding there this summer and I want to make sure I have all the appropriate paperwork in order. Thanks!

Hi Irma! My fiancee and I are also looking into a Long Island wedding. From what I have researched online, you can obtain the license from anywhere in New York for $40. There's a 24 hour waiting period from the time the license is issued, but it is valid for up to 60 days. You'll both need your birth certificates and your driver's licenses to prove your identity and citizenship. Hope this helps!

I was not even aware that one needs marriage license laws from out of state! I wonder if the same laws apply to couples from out of country? I am thinking of couples from countries such as Africa or Europe who are so in love that they decide to get married at the heat of the moment while visiting Long Island.

Daniel, it would probably depend on where those international citizens are from more specifically. I think certain countries will recognize out-of-country marriages while others will not.

The Marriage License Laws for a man and a woman to marry vary from state to state. Although there are differences between the requirements in the various states, a marriage between a man and a woman performed in one state must be recognized by every other state under the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the United States Constitution.
