AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 11 PM EDT THURSDAY The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties... Richmond...Kings...Queens...New York...Bronx... Westchester...Rockland...Nassau...Suffolk. from 11 AM to 11 PM EDT Thursday. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone . The Air Quality Index...or AQI...was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value...the greater the health concern. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young...and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. The toll free number is 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.

Caring for Wedding and Engagement Rings

Congratulations!!

You are engaged to the most wonderful person in the world.

And you have the most beautiful ring in the world.

How will it look a year or two from now?

That depends very much on how you take care of it!

Do's and Don't of caring for your rings.

1.Please remember that jewelry used to be worn only on special occasions. They are made of precious metals and not made to be worn 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
2.When you get home take off your rings, earrings, pendants, bracelets, and put them in a safe place. You will be surprised how great they will look 10, 20 years from now.
3.Platinum is 95% pure so it scratches easily. Avoid house work in it - or you'll need to polish very regularly.
4.14K white gold has a yellow tint, so it is plated with rhodium. If you wear it all the time it will turn yellowish, and you'll need to plated it regularly - $40-$50 if done well.
5.Do not waste money on home Ultrasonic - they will shake your stones loose if you use it too often.
6.Jewelry cleaner is safe to use - 2-3 times a week, 15-20 minutes each. Rinse off with hot water - but not in the sink.
7.Instead of sizing rings down, have them 'shots', 2 small balls inside the shank. These can always be removed if your finger gets bigger again.
8.Make sure you have your rings independently APPRAISED. That means not going to another jewelry store but an independent gemologist, like the Jewelry Judge.
9.And finally, make sure you have you're rings insured. Diamonds can chip. Use a company like Jeweler's Mutual instead of State Farm or taking a rider on your homeowners policy. J.M. is much better at paying out.
