Babies and Mothers Alive (BAMA) Foundation, an organization that creates partnerships that improve reproductive, maternal, and newborn health in Uganda, will be holding a holiday fundraiser on Wednesday, December 21, at 7 p.m. at Bridgeworks in Long Beach.

All are welcome to attend this event supporting BAMA’s Mama Rescue phone app which links rural women in labor to transportation from villages to health centers, and automobile taxis for emergency referral.

Improving maternal and newborn care

In Uganda, 6,000 women die every year due to complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. Uganda also has a very high infant mortality rate, with many babies dying within 28 days of life as a result of infections, birth asphyxia, birth injuries, and complications of prematurity. Since Mama Rescue’s launch 18 months ago, the app has expedited the transport of 24,000 women in labor to health centers, and the emergency transport of 2,500 women to hospitals, reducing referral time from 3 1/2 hours to 31 minutes.

Meet BAMA co-founder Dr. Marc Sklar

Event attendees will have the opportunity to meet BAMA co-founder Dr. Marc Sklar who will speak about progress in ensuring maternal and newborn health as a human right. A light dinner, as well as homemade latkes, will be served. The event is free but donations will be accepted as the organization raises funds to continue improving Uganda’s quality of healthcare to save the lives of thousands of mothers and babies.
