It's Apple Picking Season! Check Out These Great Long Island Orchards

Apple picking season typically lasts from early September to late October. Apple picking is a great all-around family outing. Fresh air, a little exercise, a bit of a treasure hunt, and bounty at the end. Whether you're looking for an orchard with all the bells and whistles or one with trees perfectly sized for the little ones, you can find it at one of Long Island's pick-your-own-apple farms. Here are some tips to picking great apples.  Select firm, bruise-free apples. The color can be anything from dark green, to yellow, pink, orange, bright red, dark red or even a combination. It all depends on the variety. Apples should be crisp and firm.  Apples ripen from the outside of the tree towards the center, so the apples out the outside of the tree will ripen first.  Try to leave the stem on the apples. That helps them store longer!
