January is commonly the time of year we re-evaluate our goals and set new ones. Typically, people self-talk many "shoulds" during this self-evaluation; "I 'should' lose weight;" "I 'should' stop smoking;" "I 'should' get to the gym more often." Simply using the word "should" puts pressure on you to succeed or fail. If you do not accomplish what you "should", you fail.

Goal setting is not about restriction,
It's not about distress
It's not about suffering...

It's about freedom...

That limits your best self.

Accomplishing goals is meant to be exhilarating. Practice talking to yourself in a positive way, using language that uplifts and motivates rather than sets you up for failure. "I will feel energized when I workout more often." "I can almost feel my lungs rejuvenating when I quit smoking."

Remember, working towards our goals need not be dictated by a calendar; it is impelled by our determination. Constant and never-ending self-improvement is vital to keeping us happy and more importantly, healthy.
