Pedestrian Dies after Being Struck by a Police Vehicle

Suffolk County Police Vehicular Crime Unit detectives are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in which a pedestrian was struck by a Suffolk County police car.

East Islip, NY - December 29th, 2014 - Suffolk County Police Vehicular Crime Unit detectives are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in which a pedestrian was struck by a Suffolk County police car.

Craig Schiffer, 54, was crossing Main Street last night at 10:34 p.m. when he was struck by a police vehicle that was traveling eastbound on Main Street in response to a 911 call in East Islip.

Schiffer, of East Meadow, was transported by Islip Exchange Ambulance Company to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he was later pronounced dead.

The police vehicle, which was occupied by two officers, was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. No one else was injured in this incident.
