Man in Critical Condition after Eastport One-Car Crash, SCPD Reports

UPDATE - December 12, 2017 - Matthew Hillebrand, the man who was involved in a single-vehicle crash on County Road 51 in Eastport on December 11, has died.
 
The investigation is continuing.

Eastport, NY - December 12, 2017 - Seventh Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that critically injured a man in Eastport, New York, on Monday, December 11, 2017.
 
Matthew Hillebrand was driving a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe southbound on County Road 51 when he apparently lost control of his vehicle, veered off the road, struck a metal utility pole and caught on fire at approximately 2:50 p.m. The fire spread quickly. Passing motorists, including a member of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, pulled Hillebrand from the burning car. 
 
Hillebrand, 47, of Babylon, New York, was transported via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is in critical condition.
 
The Hyundai was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing.
