Hurricane Ida’s impact still lingers nearly two months after the devastating storm swept through half the country, with flooding and destruction still evident in many homes, some of which remain uninhabitable.

As part of an ongoing storm recovery effort for local communities, Long Island Board of REALTORS® (LIBOR) recently purchased and delivered $25,000 worth of materials, including nearly 1,200 pieces of sheetrock and 655 pairs of gloves to Queens-area residents whose homes were damaged by the ravaging storm.

“Over 200 households throughout Flushing, Hollis and East Elmhurst were assisted through the efforts of Long Island Board of REALTORS®. It was remarkable to see residents stepping out of their homes to help out their fellow neighbors who, in some cases, began their recovery efforts with the materials we provided. Before leaving the block on 88th and Astoria Blvd, I could already hear ban saws cutting away! Queens Borough President, Donovan Richards and his team are doing tremendous work to address the needs of Queens residents affected by Hurricane Ida, and we were delighted to help where we could,” said LIBOR Senior Director of Public Policy and Government Affairs Marlo Paventi Dilts, who was instrumental in securing and delivering these much-needed home repair items.

Earlier this month, LIBOR in partnership with the REALTORS® Relief Foundation (RRF) and New York State Association of REALTORS® (NYSAR), was also ready to lend a helping hand by providing an opportunity for housing assistance to local residents adversely impacted by Hurricane Ida. Assistance was available to qualified applicants towards either monthly mortgage expenses for the primary residence that was damaged or cost due to displacement from the primary residence resulting from the natural disaster.

The REALTORS® Relief Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to providing housing-related assistance to victims of disasters. Created as a REALTOR®-driven response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, RRF continues to restore and rebuild communities effected by disasters such as wildfires, hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes thanks to the generosity of individual REALTORS®, REALTOR® Associations, and affiliated organizations. Together, through the RRF, our community has helped over 17,000 families remain in their homes.

“Many residents in our local communities are still severely affected by the destruction of Hurricane Ida,” said LIBOR President Susan Helsinger. “Long Island Board of REALTORS® is committed to working with the Queens Borough President and other relief effort advocates and groups to ensure that our neighbors have a safe and warm place to call home.”
