Miller Place, NY - October 4, 2016 - A new face has appeared on the streets of Miller Place. Gina is the new crossing guard who is stationed at the intersection of Route 25A and Miller Place Road. The safety of pedestrians has been a concern at this intersection for many years, and the new crossing guard is an additional safety measure to help students and residents cross the road. Gina will help pedestrians at all four of the crosswalks at this intersection for limited hours in the morning and in the afternoon on school days.

When Miller Place Superintendent Dr. Marianne Cartisano approached Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker with her concerns about the safety of students crossing at this intersection, Legislator Anker knew something must be done. With Miller Place High School on the south side of Route 25A and the North Country Road Middle School on the north side of Route 25A, many students cross this intersection to get to and from school, as well as to gain access to restaurants and retail stores.

Legislator Anker worked with the Suffolk County Police Department to conduct an evaluation of the intersection and the police deemed that it would be appropriate to place a crossing guard at this intersection.

“Since entering public office, I have been working diligently with the Suffolk County Police Department, the New York State Department of Transportation, and the Department of Public Works to improve the safety of our streets,” said Legislator Anker. “The safety of our children is my top priority.”

“The Miller Place School District community is extremely grateful for the efforts of Legislator Anker and the Suffolk County Police Department in assigning a Crossing Guard for this hazardous intersection. We continue to appreciate their conscientious decisions to improve safety in our neighborhoods,” said Dr. Cartisano.
