NCPD: Roosevelt Man Turns Early-Morning Bike Ride into Arrest for Assault and Drugs

The First Squad reports the arrest of a Roosevelt man for an Assault and Drug Possession that occurred on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at 2:50 a.m. in Roosevelt. 
 
According to Detectives, Officers encountered Fernando Ortiz, 29, of 54 Henry Street, while riding his bicycle without proper safety equipment including: no lights, working brakes, safety reflectors, a bell or signaling device. Defendant Ortiz then fled on foot and attempted to conceal drugs from Officers. 
 
Upon apprehending the suspect, one Officer sustained injuries during the course of the arrest as the defendant was violent and combative while resisting arrest. The Officer was transported to a local area hospital for treatment. Officers discovered an envelope containing a white rocklike substance believed to be crack cocaine. 
 
Defendant Ortiz is charged with various VTL infractions, Assault 2nd Degree, Tampering with Physical Evidence, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 5th Degree, Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd Degree, Resisting Arrest. Defendant Ortiz has an open Nassau County Bench Warrant from August 2, 2023. He will be arraigned on Monday, October 2, 2023 at First District Court, 99 Main Street in Hempstead.
