Senator John E. Brooks (SD-8) was proud to present a funding award of $20,000 to The Safe Center LI, Inc. to support its programs’ operations.

The Safe Center LI provides comprehensive services to victims of interpersonal violence including domestic violence, rape/sexual assault, child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse, human trafficking and elder abuse. Services include individual and group counseling, advocacy, case management, legal representation and consultation, rapid rehousing, vocational assistance and community and professional education.

In addition to facilitating the Child Advocacy Center for Nassau County – where children who have disclosed sexual abuse are brought for forensic interviews and medical exams – they also facilitate the 24/7 hotline for Nassau County responding to calls related to all areas of interpersonal violence and operate the only domestic violence shelter in Nassau County.

Under the direction of Director Cynthia Scott, The Safe Center LI’s upholding of its Mission Statement – to protect, assist and empower victims of family violence and sexual assault while challenging and changing social systems that tolerate and perpetuate abuse – is possible as a result of the unification of two former not-for-profit agencies that separately served child or adult victims of family violence and sexual abuse.

The merger of the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CADV) and the Coalition Against Child Abuse & Neglect (CCAN) into one unified organization provides a fast and easy path to resources that assist in saving and changing the lives of the victims of sexual assault, severe physical abuse, and domestic and family violence.

Lauding the positive impact that The Safe Center LI has played in the lives of Long Islanders, Senator Brooks remarked, “As a community we are grateful to organizations like The Safe Center LI and understand why they need to exist — the work that is undertaken here is so important for far too many people we each know and love. We live in a world where there are a lot of good people trying to do the right thing, and the staff here embody this ethos, which is why I am so pleased I could secure funding to help support the important programs they run.”
