Two weeks ago George Zimmerman was at the center of the media’s attention. His trial over the shooting of Trayvon Martin sparked outrage and this weekend Hempstead was home to one of 100 Justice for Trayvon rallies in the United States. Today Zimmerman’s back in the press but for reasons other than his trial.

It came out yesterday that four days after his acquittal Zimmerman and another man pulled a family of four from their overturned Ford Explorer, according to the Seminole County Sheriff’s office. The incident wasn't far from the scene of the shooting. A sheriff’s deputy responded to the single-car accident at 5:45 p.m. and saw Zimmerman and the other person had already pulled the family out before he got there.

Zimmerman was not under any official capacity when he helped the family of four escape their SUV. He gave his account to the deputy and said he didn’t witness the original overturning of the vehicle. The family in the car suffered no injuries and it’s unclear whether they may have if Zimmerman had not pulled them out.

We first saw him in February 2012 when he gained national coverage for shooting and killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The case went to trial a year later. It lasted three weeks and Zimmerman was acquitted of second degree murder and manslaughter after the jury deliberated for two days.

The jury’s decision infuriated many and even prompted President Barack Obama to say, "You know, when Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said that this could have been my son. Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me, 35 years ago." Zimmerman’s attempted to keep a low profile following the trial and pulling the family out of the overturned Ford Explorer marks his first public appearance.
