Comet NEOWISE is slowly fading from view in our evening sky. The heavenly visitor is somewhat visible with the naked eye (if you have good vision in a dark location) but the best observing can be done with a halfway decent set of binoculars.

There is still time to catch a glipse of the comet before it fades away but best get out there quick. The comet is traveling further from the earth and the moon is starting to wax toward full, meaning more light in the sky to wash out any views.

Intrepid astronomy buffs busted out their gear while NEOWISE was still in the neighborhood to capture it’s once-in-6,000-years flyby.

Below we present some great pics taken of NEOWISE around Long Island.

Linda Price captured this pic on her iPhone on July 12. “I was at Sunken Meadow with many others, basking in the view of the comet before sunrise,” she explained. NEOWISE was initially prominent in the sky in the early mornings, before it became visible in the evenings around July 14.

Steven Bellavia shot these pics of Comet NEOWISE (aka C/2020 F3) over Cutchogue Harbor, on July 9. He then captured it on July 12 and July 14 from the farm field on Lutpons Point, in Mattituck.
