Holbrook, NY - July 2, 2015 - Recently, the Merrimac Elementary School Student Lighthouse Team hosted their June Clean-Up and Beautification Project, in which dozens of young students helped to clean up their school grounds.

After a successful presentation given to the students by Nancy Cochran of Keep Islip Clean, the Student Lighthouse Team became inspired to help the cause. The students, equipped with vests, gloves and trash-pickers, were able to work together as a team to rid their school grounds of litter and garbage while also planting fresh, new flowers and plants just in time for summer vacation. In doing so, the students did something positive, not just for the sake of their community’s appearance but for the sake of the environment.

“Getting young people involved in beautification projects will leave a lasting impact and lay the groundwork for civic mindfulness and engagement, said Legislator Bill Lindsay III, who provided the cleanup supplies. “Thank you to all the parents, teachers, administrators, and most importantly the students, for their outstanding efforts in beautifying and preserving our community.”
