Woman Arrested for Attempting to Kidnap 6-Year-Old Girl in Freeport

Freeport, NY - January 24, 2017 - First Squad detectives report the details of an arrest for an attempted kidnapping that occurred in Freeport on Monday, 01/23/17 at 8:30 P.M.

According to detectives, Lela Witts, 20, of Roosevelt, while inside Liberty Tax Services located at 83 W. Merrick Rd., grabbed a female victim, 6, by the arm and pulled her outside to the sidewalk.  The victim’s mother, who was present at the scene, struggled with the defendant until she was able to free her daughter and retreat back into the store, where she notified police.  A witness followed the defendant across the street into a diner and pointed the defendant out to police.

No injuries were reported.

Witts is being charged with Kidnapping 2nd Degree (Attempt), Unlawful Imprisonment 2nd Degree and was arraigned on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 in First District Court, Hempstead.
