September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Here are some events Long Islanders can join to show support to the children and families affected by pediatric cancers.

St. Jude Walk/Run Long Island

Saturday, September 21

Heckscher State Park, East Islip

9 a.m.

The 5K St. Jude Walk/Run raises money for the kids of St. Jude, one of the world’s premier pediatric cancer research centers, where families never receive a bill for anything. Visit the website for more information and to register. 

 

The Cancer Center for Kids at NYU Winthrop Hospital

18th Annual Family Walk

Eisenhower Park, East Meadow

9 a.m.

The Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at NYU Winthrop Hospital is holding its 18th Annual Family Walk on Sunday, September 22 at Eisenhower Park to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancers and blood disorders. The walk will benefit the CCFK’s psychosocial programs and services, which create therapeutic and supportive interventions for patients and their families, and include child life, creative arts therapy, social work, and child psychology. Lexiebean Foundation Fundraiser

Texas Hold’em Tournament 2019

The Lexiebean Foundation helps ease the financial and emotional burdens that childhood cancer places upon a family, while providing comfort to children as they cope with the extended hospital stays often associated with their illness. The foundation will be holding a Texas Hold’em Tournament on September 27. The entrance donation is $150 in advance (per player) and includes 300 chips, food and two drinks. James Lodato Cure Childhood Cancer 5K

Sunday, September 29

Eisenhower Park, East Meadow

8:30 a.m.

Bring the family for the first annual James Lodato Cure Childhood Cancer 5K in honor of James Lodato a 7-year-old Wantagh boy who passed away last year from alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. Proceeds will be donated to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where James was treated and go toward pediatric cancer research. Kids, people with strollers, runners and walkers —are all welcome. There’s a 15 & under age group for the 5K as well as a free half-mile fun run for kids at 8:30 a.m. Sign up online.

 

Gold Ribbon Days

The Sarah Grace Foundation

The Sarah Grace Foundation is a Hicksville-based not-for-profit organization that provides comfort and support to the families of children suffering from cancer. Anyone who makes a donation to help fund Sarah Grace Foundation programs will receive a choice of a gold ribbon pin or sticker. The gold ribbon is the official ribbon of children with cancer worldwide. The Sarah Grace Book Angel program, the Bead Program, The Escape HatchTM are just a few of the programs the foundation supports.
