News 12 Long Island and MSG Varsity Honor LI's Best and Brightest Scholar Athletes

News 12 Long Island hosted the 24th Annual News 12 Long Island/MSG Varsity Scholar Athlete awards dinner at the Woodbury Country Club on Wednesday, June 22, honoring the best and brightest from Long Island.

Woodbury, NY, June 29, 2011 - News 12 Long Island hosted the 24th Annual News 12 Long Island/MSG Varsity Scholar Athlete awards dinner at the Woodbury Country Club on Wednesday, June 22, honoring the best and brightest from Long Island. From 30 amazing students, two exceptional scholar athletes were honored with $2,000 scholarships. This year's recipients were Elizabeth "Attie" Schubauer of Cold Spring Harbor High School and Samson Bialostok of Lawrence High School.

News 12 Long Island's senior sports correspondent, Bob Wolff, hosted the ceremony with the assistance of News 12 Long Island's sports director, Kevin Maher. The awards concluded with Mr. Wolff's wonderful rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" to which he sings and plays the ukulele.

"These amazing young Long Islanders are literally at the top of their class in terms of both academic and athletic achievement," said Pat Dolan, president of News 12 Networks and news director for News 12 Long Island. "We congratulate all of the students, their families, and their schools for earning this recognition and we wish them continued success. News 12 looks forward to continuing to spotlight the noteworthy achievements of local students in our communities."

Throughout the school year, News 12 Long Island's "Scholar Athlete" segments appear every Monday beginning in the 5:00 p.m. newscast. The students who are selected are at the top of their class academically, and many participate and excel in more than one sport in their high schools. Athletic Directors or other high school representatives can nominate students to become a News 12 Long Island "Scholar Athlete of the Week."
