When it comes to pest control, you don’t just want to engage the services of any old company to protect your home; you want the best – equipped with the latest in innovative technology – to ensure that when the pests go away, they STAY away.

JP McHale Pest Management of Southampton specializes in eliminating pests through biological and environmentally sensitive methods, including organic solutions and advanced remote technology options for both residential and commercial properties. Founded more than 50 years ago, JP McHale is a family business operated by Jim McHale, Jr., with service areas all throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, as well as several satellite offices in towns such as Cutchogue and Oakdale.

JP McHale offers a comprehensive range of services using cutting-edge technology to handle any sort of pest-related issue you may be encountering; they control carpenter ants, ticks, mosquitoes, termites, all species of rodents, wasps, animal and wildlife...just about anything that you could think of that may be causing you and your family grief.

The company emphasizes its cutting-edge technology to devise the most effective pest control solutions, offering their clients state-of-the-art systems that can cut off infestations in their homes before they even happen.

This technology works especially well on Long Island, where a lot of people have vacation homes and don’t reside locally year-round.

“We have our own proprietary technology that's called the SMART System. It's a digital remote monitoring surveillance program where we put these units in people's homes, and our system can detect any activity – say, a rodent – which immediately notifies us in our office. What happens next is that we call you, as opposed to the other way around, and then we head over to your house and take care of any issues that have emerged or are emerging,” said Jim McHale.

The SMART System consists of small, non-invasive sensors that are installed in places where pests tend to congregate, such as attics and basements. In addition to notifying his company when a problem is evident on a 24/7 basis, the technology also provides the company with raw data that they could use to further their preventative care.

“Our pest control technology is a major paradigm shift in the industry because now we can offer preventative care instead of just waiting for a problem to happen and then taking care of it after the fact,” he said.

“Sometimes infestations could be very predictable, so if you capture the data and track it, you can almost predict when the infestations are going to occur based on the temperature, the type of weather, and so on,” McHale added. “So, if you can predict when things can happen, you can do your job even more efficiently and effectively. Previously, we were simply trap checkers, but now we can actually spend our time finding the avenues of entry and making the solution more chronic in nature.”

For those feeling like they may be priced out of such an advanced pest control solution, McHale was quick to point out that it's actually quite affordable and is part of the company's annual maintenance program.

However, even if you aren't using the SMART System in your home, McHale said that there are still some common signs to be on the lookout for in the event that you have a pest infestation.

“If you see signs of what looks like sawdust, that's indicative of maybe a carpenter ant issue...they don't eat the wood as termites do, they simply tear it out and lay their eggs in it. They tend to do it in wood that is wet. So, if you have carpenter ants you probably also have a moisture problem. With termites, there would be a swarming of insects that lose their wings; rodents would be rodent droppings; and tick and mosquito control are all based on actually seeing them visually,” he explains.

“We do a lot of work on Long Island with tick and mosquito control.”

JP McHale Pest Management started over 50 years ago, incorporated in 1971 by McHale’s father, Jim McHale, Sr., an Irish immigrant who originally started out as a prison guard at the Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining, New York.

McHale, Sr. then started a beer tap cleaning business on the side in order to make ends meet (this business is actually still in operation today). He eventually purchased a pest control route from a fellow guard who was retiring, and from there he grew his pest control business. Jim McHale, Jr. started riding along with his father on jobs in the early 1980s.He began running the business himself in 1988, and in 1992, he and his brothers took over the company completely.

“While riding along with my father, I learned quickly that this business is more about people than just eliminating bug problems,” McHale said. “It is all about building relationships.”

A state decision regarding the chemicals used by pest control companies was passed into law in Albany, having a positive impact on the company’s business and the pest control industry overall.

“Pest control then became a well-regulated and regarded industry,” McHale said. “They started requiring licensing and training, as well as removing all of the hydrocarbons and other chemicals that were in pest control sprays (at that time), and had previously been harmful to animals, “

He added, “These formulas have since been replaced with what we use today, which focuses on the environment and wildlife, are all safe and break down in sunlight, and require regular reapplication.”

“With the old chemicals they used to use, it was basically a one-and-done process,” he continued. “But with the required changeover to safer products, it became something that needed to be done now on a bi-ortri-annual basis. It was then that JP McHale Pest Management really took off.”

In 2019, upon the retirement of his brothers, JP McHale Pest Management was acquired by a private equity group, with McHale staying on as the company's president.

McHale said that he feels a great deal of pride to have taken the company started by his father so many years ago and to have evolved and grown it to embrace emerging technologies, making it one of Long Island’s premier pest control companies, as can be attested to by their many satisfied clients.

“For 30 years I've built this business, and it was all organic growth, brick by brick...we just concentrated on great service and environmentally sustainable pest solutions,” he said. “I'm an entomologist – probably one of the only ones in the business when I first started – and people liked the fact that we were scientists and took a scientific approach. And our recent merger has given us an even larger base and a partner with significant resources, so we can serve our customers all the better.”
