Man Drowns in Long Island Sound

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating a drowning that occurred in the Long Island sound this afternoon.

Port Jefferson, NY - August 14, 2016 - Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating a drowning that occurred in the Long Island sound this afternoon.

Mouhamed Souleiman was on a boat in the Long Island Sound with friends when he went for a swim Long Island Sound, south of the Middle Ground Lighthouse at approximately 12:10 p.m. The current caused Souleiman to drift away from the boat. Two friends who were on the vessel located Souleiman in the water, unresponsive, and pulled him onto the boat.  

Souleiman, 42, of Post Jefferson, was transported from the scene by Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers to Port Jefferson Marina.  Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance transported Souleiman to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation is continuing. The death appears to be non-criminal in nature.
