Local veterans organizations hosted their annual United Veterans Organization’s (UVO) Flag Retirement Ceremony at Fireman’s Park in Patchogue recently.

On hand were representatives from the American Legion Patchogue Post 269, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Patchogue Post 269, American Veterans (AMVETS) Patchogue Post 111 and the Village of Patchogue for the ceremony. Also in attendance were members of Boy Scout Troop 540 and Brookhaven Town officials.

According to the official US Flag and Disposal Ceremony guidelines, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning." A Patchogue Fire Department truck and volunteer firefighters were on duty to assist in keeping the event safe and the fire under control.
