Islandia, NY, May 2013 - On Thursday, May 23, Legislator Sarah Anker attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the nation’s first affordable housing subdivision developed exclusively for Long Island veterans.

Long Island Home Builders Care Development Corporation (LIHBCDC) will construct six new homes for veterans who have served the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The group plans to complete construction by Veterans Day, November 11, 2013.

"This program, which is the first of its kind, will provide much needed housing opportunities for those who have bravely served our country - in a community where all the neighbors are veterans," said Legislator Anker.

Veterans interested in purchasing the homes, which will be sold at prices substantially below market prices, must meet certain qualifications.  Potential homebuyers will be chosen by a committee of local, county and state commanders of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The "Building New Homes for Returning Veterans" program was created in 2009 by LIHBCDC, and has been made possible through joint efforts of Suffolk County, private donors, local municipalities and members of LIBI.

Applications for the homes will be accepted through June 30. For more information, visit ww.lihbc.org.
