Lake Grove, NY - May 21st, 2015 - Three William Floyd Middle School students – Sophia Chinea, Casey Kriss and Gillian Hicks – recently competed in the third annual Junior Iron Chef Competition held at Whole Foods Market in Lake Grove.
The event, sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, is designed to encourage Long Island’s youth to learn new skills in cooking which will lead to a healthier lifestyle, promote the use of local food to support local farmers and the environment and more. This year was the first year the competition was open to middle school students, who were assigned the challenge of creating a breakfast dish.
Sixth grader Sophia Chinea, a member of team “Savory Blazers,” finished in third place. William Floyd Middle School Home and Careers teacher Melissa Carlin was in attendance to cheer the students on.
