SPCD: Mother Arrested for DWI with Three Children in Car

The woman fled the scene of the crash wither her children, but was caught a short time later.

Huntington Station, NY - May 11, 2014 - Suffolk County Police today arrested a woman after she crashed into a telephone pole with three children in her car in Huntington Station.
 
Sarah Knakal, was driving westbound on E. Jericho Turnpike at approximately 6 p.m. when she struck a telephone pole in front of 967 E. Jericho Turnpike, and then struck a sign.
 
Knakal left the scene on foot with her three children. The children are ages, 5, 7, and 9. Second Precinct patrol officers located Knakal at E. Jericho Turnpike and Cooper Avenue approximately 10 minutes later.  
 
There were no injuries. The children were turned over to a family member. Suffolk County Child Protective Services were notified.
 
Second Squad detectives charged Knakal, 30, of 22 Cooper Ave., Huntington Station, with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated With a Child 15 Years Old or Younger (Leandra’s Law), Leaving the Scene of an Incident and three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
 
She is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on May 11.
