Authorities: Bay Shore Man Attempts to Kill Girlfriend Before Killing Himself

Bay Shore, NY - April 24, 2018 - Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating a suicide and attempted murder that occurred in Bay Shore on April 23, 2018.
 
Third Precinct officers responded to a call at approximately 11:30 a.m. to check on the welfare of a resident on Washington Avenue in Bay Shore. When officers arrived, they found Edvin Sorto Gomez dead from a self-inflicted wound. A female who was critically injured was also found in the home. The woman, Gomez’ girlfriend was transported to a local hospital where she was in critical condition. 
 
Following an investigation by Homicide Squad detectives, it was determined Gomez, 48, injured his 57-year-old girlfriend and then hung himself. Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.  
 
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
