Suffolk Sheriff’s Office To Host Law Enforcement Wellness Conference April 18

On Thursday, April 18, 2024 at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office will host their first annual Wellness Conference at the Van Nostrand Theatre at the Grant campus of Suffolk County Community College. The conference is targeted to discuss the unique stressors that affect men and women in law enforcement and public safety professionals. Expert speakers will cover topics such as mental health, resilience, trauma and general wellness (full schedule below).  More than 200 local law enforcement officials are expected to attend. 

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s Wellness Unit, which began late 2022, is the only full-time Wellness Units within a law enforcement agency on Long Island. The Unit aims to strengthen the health and wellness of all Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office staff and provide peer support during times of need. Since inception, they have assisted Officers more than 3,500 times, created a Trained Peer Support Team with 41 members and launched a Wellness Phone App that offers "get help now" option that immediately connects a user to a variety of resources related to mental health and suicide.

9:30AM: Suffolk County Sheriff Dr. Errol Toulon Jr.
10:15am: Dr. James Vosswinkel (Stony Brook University) on the topic of trauma and the stages of trauma in the Law Enforcement community.
11:15am: Wellness Officer Brent Schlafer, Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Belinda Schlafer (Mental Health Therapist) on stress management.
2:15pm: Dr. Jeff Thompson on AWE Project/Resiliency in Law Enforcement.
