Uniondale, NY - April 12, 2017 - PSEG Long Island is beginning its first FEMA circuit reliability project in the Village of Valley Stream this month. The utility is committed to strengthening key electric circuits in local neighborhoods to further improve the reliability of the energy grid for thousands of its customers.

PSEG Long Island licensed and approved contractors will work on this route for approximately four months. Work will include replacing existing wires, installing new and more durable poles, and installing or replacing switching equipment to help reduce the number of customers affected by an outage.

“Proactively working on system upgrades and enhancements across the service territory allows us to create a more reliable and resilient transmission and distribution system,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island vice president of transmission and distribution operations. “This project ensures that residents in Valley Stream receive the best-in-class service and reliability that they expect and deserve.”

The route covers approximately two miles along an electric main line circuit. PSEG Long Island crews will work on the following streets in the Village of Valley Stream:

  • Hunter Avenue between Copiague Street and Sobro Avenue
  • Copiague Street between Hunter Avenue and Lyon Street
  • Ethel Street between Lyon Street and Shaw Avenue
  • Arlington Avenue between Copiague Street and West Merrick Road
  • Broadway between Harvard Street and Fir Street
  • Fir Street between Broadway and Boden Avenue
  • Borden Avenue between Fir Street and West Valley Stream Boulevard
  • West Valley Stream Boulevard between Boden Avenue and South Central Avenue
  • South Terrace Place between LIRR tracks and Buscher Avenue

This project is funded through the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Assistance Program, which was established to harden electrical distribution infrastructure against future storm damage and help restore power more quickly. In 2014, more than $729 million of federal recovery funds were secured for the Long Island Power Authority via an agreement between Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), under the FEMA 406 Mitigation Program.

PSEG Long Island operates the Long Island Power Authority’s transmission and distribution system under a 12-year contract.  PSEG Long Island is a subsidiary of Public Service Enterprise Group Incorporated (NYSE:PEG), a publicly traded diversified energy company with annual revenues of $9.1 billion.
