Long Island boy Jack Miller, age 9, and his two best friends, Matthew and Brady, will be participating in a St. Baldrick's Foundation event at a Shamrock Shootout Lacrosse tournament this Saturday, March 15, where the three lads have vowed to shave their heads to help with a valiant fundraising effort to support childhood cancer research.
The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a not-for-profit organization whose goal is to raise funds to help find cures for children with cancer.
Jack, Matthew and Brady have been out securing pledges for sponsorship for this weekend's head-shaving event; since 2000, thousands of such fundraising events have seen countless volunteers shave their heads in solidarity with cancer victims, who typically lose their hair as a result of the treatments they are forced to undergo in combating the disease.
In the first two days, the boys have exceeded their goal of $500 and have already raised over $2,000 for childhood cancer. Their new goal is $2,500, and they are almost there. They will be shaving their heads at the event on Saturday.
"On Saturday, March 15, we—along with our closest friends—will be participating in the Saint Baldrick’s fundraiser to raise money for childhood cancer research," Jack, Matthew and Brady said in a joint statement on their St. Baldrick's fundraising page. "Before our lacrosse tournament, we’ll be shaving our heads to show our support for kids battling cancer. Every donation makes a difference, and we’d love your support in this important cause!"
