Smithtown, NY - April 3, 2015 - To kick off the American Heart Association’s National Walking Day, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center encouraged employees and visitors to join in a campus walk to help improve overall health and increase energy.
National Walking Day is aimed at reminding everyone that being physically active is important for overall wellness. And, according to the American Heart Association, about 80 percent of adults do not get enough activity to maintain good health. In fact, most adults should get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity at least 5 days a week for a total of 150 minutes per week. Children should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity daily.
Are you incorporating enough physical activity in your life? Well, now is the time to start and the American Heart Association has provided a free four-week intermediate walking plan to help anyone get started.
To continue the walking momentum, starting May 12th, health care professionals from St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center will be on the boardwalk at Sunken Meadow State Park encouraging fellow Long Islanders to spring into physical fitness. Representatives will be on the boardwalk throughout the spring and summer months on Tuesdays, on the following dates: June 9th, July 14th, August 11th and September 15th. Bring the entire family and walk, jog, run or stroll—speak to health care professionals and pick up free fitness related giveaways.
The Board “Walk” Your Way to Wellness community outreach program is an initiative in response to the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council’s Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC). The LIHC represents the partnership of 24 hospitals on Long Island, dozens of community-based organizations, schools and colleges , and the two county health departments—all joined together to connect Long Islanders to better health. Physical activity is just one of the components of the collaborative work.
