Suffolk County Police on Monday, February 10 arrested a day care employee for endangering the welfare of multiple children after she fainted while under the influence of alcohol and or drugs at a Babylon facility.
Police were called to Pride and Joy Childcare, located at 406A Deer Park Ave., after an employee, Maria Rubino, fainted at approximately 12:40 p.m. While being treated and transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, a paramedic with the Babylon Fire Department smelled alcohol on Rubino’s breath and noted she was exhibiting signs of intoxication by drugs and or alcohol. Child Protective Services were notified and an investigation was initiated.
First Precinct Investigative Unit officers determined Rubino, who was not the only employee assigned to the room, was responsible for caring for five children ranging in age from four months to 18 months old while she was intoxicated.
Rubino, 38, of 70 Jayson Ave., Great Neck, was charged with five counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. She will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on a later date.
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
