Mastic Beach, NY - February 6, 2015 - William Floyd High School music students recently received a visit from Corinne Costell, a sophomore majoring in vocal performance at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, which prepares men and women for careers as performers, music teachers and music leaders. Corinne spoke to more than 100 students about what it’s like to be a music major in college and how getting exposed to different kinds of music has helped her flourish and become a more well-rounded musician. Corinne is the daughter of William Floyd High School social studies teacher, Patricia Costell.

During the visit, Corinne performed a selection of the opera, “Don Giovanni” in Italian (video below), and encouraged the students to become familiar with the romance languages so they understand what they are singing. She also shared with the students her classes and available opportunities such as choir, music history, piano, playing a secondary instrument and participating in a specialized choir. Corinne answered a number of questions from the students in regards to campus life, balancing school with work and personal time, the audition process and more. Her goal is to one day become a member of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.

“Visits from current college students offer our students an opportunity to take a glimpse inside the college world,” said Ryan Feldscher, Lead Music Teacher, William Floyd School District. “Initially, high school students might be hesitant, since college may sound like such a challenge. However, with a chance to ask questions and hear from someone currently enrolled, those fears subside. Additionally, experiencing a live operatic performance from a voice major inspires our students to continue working hard to achieve their goals.”
