Man in Custody After Allegedly Firing Multiple Handgun Shots into Air in New Cassel, Cops Say

The Third Squad reports the arrest of a New Cassel man for Criminal Possession of a Weapon that occurred on Wednesday, January 18, 2024 at 9:07 p.m. in New Cassel.
 
According to detectives, officers responded to a 911 call for multiple shots being fired in the air on Brook Street in the vicinity of Broadway. Upon Arrival, Criminal Intelligence Rapid Response Team (CIRRT) Officers observed a male matching the description given in the 911 call walking northbound on Brook Street. 
 
Defendant Kevin Vanegas, 27, of 264 Grand Street, ran into the rear of 700 Broadway where he was placed into custody. Subsequent to the investigation three shell casings were recovered on Brook Street as well as a black P80 handgun was recovered. 
 
Defendant Vanegas is being charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd degree, Criminal Use of a Firearm 2nd degree and Criminal Possession of a Firearm. He will be arraigned on Friday, January 19, 2024 at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.
