Not sure if your child’s car seat or booster seat is properly positioned or correctly installed? Get peace of mind by bringing your vehicle to the Child Car Safety Inspection Program presented by the Town of Hempstead. On select dates in July and August, Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will inspect vehicles to ensure the correct installation of car seats, including rear-facing and forward-facing car seats and booster seats.

The technicians will also examine seat belts, check for recall notices or possible defects for the current car seat model being used, and provide appropriate car seat recommendations. Under New York State's Child Restraint Law, a child must remain in an appropriate child restraint system, such as a safety seat, harness, vest, or booster seat, while riding in a motor vehicle until the age of eight. A child restraint system must meet the child's size and weight recommended by the manufacturer.

The free inspections are by appointment and take about 30 minutes. Upcoming dates are as follows:

July 15 & 17 - Acorn Lane Pool, 67-79 Tanners Lane, Levittown

July 30 & 31 - Veterans Memorial Park, 1700 Prospect Avenue, East Meadow

August 14 & 15 - Newbridge Road Park, 2600 Newbridge Road, Bellmore

August 19 & 21 - Forest City Community Park, 3099 Morgan Drive, Wantagh

Appointment slots are scheduled between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To make an appointment, call the Department of Public Safety at (516) 538-1900, ext. 7709 (Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) or visit the Town of Hempstead website.
