*UPDATE* Reports indicate that the tremors experienced by Long Islanders this morning at about 10:23 a.m. were the result of a 4.8 magnitude earthquake originating from Hunterdon County, New Jersey, with the effects of the event being felt throughout the Tri-State area.
 
The earthquake was located approximately 4 miles northeast of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, with a depth of about 3 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
 
Earthquakes that are between 4.0 and 4.9 in magnitude are considered to be minor.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reports the earthquake struck around 10:23 a.m. local time. Social media users across the East Coast reported feeling shaking around that time, with "#earthquake" trending on X shortly thereafter.
